Kikole Hati: God’s Goodness in a Hostile World

Dear Awesome and Children to Come,

On Sunday, 04 May 2025, I attended the service at All Saints’ Cathedral Kampala, where Rev Walter Apunyo preached a powerful message under the theme “God’s Goodness in a Hostile World,” drawing from Genesis 37:12–24 and Luke 16:01–28.

We live in a world that is naturally hostile. Evil often surrounds us, and yet, the goodness of God still prevails. Joseph’s story in Genesis 37 is a reminder that even in the face of hostility from those closest to us—his own brothers—God’s hand can still be seen.

Joseph experienced hostility because:

  • He chose to walk in the fear of the Lord and uphold righteousness, even as a youth (Gen 37:2; 39:9). His obedience to God cost him the comfort of acceptance among his brothers.
  • His father loved him deeply, which stirred jealousy (Gen 37:3).
  • He dared to dream—dreams that pointed to leadership and greatness. His brothers couldn’t stand the thought of him rising above them (Gen 37:18–20).

Still, Joseph held on to his faith. Though naïve to their plot, God was not. 2 Chronicles 16:9 reminds us that the Lord watches over those whose hearts are fully His. Psalm 2:1–4 shows us that while nations rage, God laughs—because His plan will always stand.

Just as Balaam in Numbers 23:20–21 could not curse what God had blessed, no enemy plan can undo what God has ordained. They may plot, but they will waste their resources. Their schemes will not stand.

In Joseph’s journey, God’s goodness was evident:

  • Genesis 37:21–22: Even in the pit, God raised one man—Reuben—to stand for him. Just like Jeremiah 38:8, God sends someone in your darkest moment to pull you back up.
  • Though stripped of his tunic and sold into slavery, the pit did not hold him. God preserved his life and redirected it toward purpose and greatness.
  • Genesis 50:15–18: What the enemy meant for evil, God turned for good.

Friends, we too live in a hostile world. We may be misunderstood, betrayed, or attacked—but God is never done with us. Joseph forgave his brothers and allowed God to work in him. He clung to his Maker. Today, many of us are so angry at God that we miss the escape He has already provided.

When we hold onto unforgiveness, we imprison ourselves with a key only we possess. But Joseph forgave, and God fulfilled His purpose through him. Romans 8:28 reminds us that all things work together for good to those who love God.

May you walk through this hostile world with the assurance that God’s goodness will never leave you. He is working something good—right now—for you.
